Build a trip to Beijing
Wanshou Temple is a Buddhist complex in western Beijing founded during the Ming dynasty and later patronized by the Qing court. A sequence of gates, halls, courtyards and gardens creates a compact architectural axis sometimes compared with a miniature imperial palace. The temple now houses the Beijing Art Museum, whose collections of sculpture, painting, ceramics and decorative arts occupy spaces originally designed for worship. Its location near the historic water routes toward the Summer Palace connected the temple with imperial travel and ceremonial life. Ancient trees, rockeries and surviving religious architecture preserve a calm landscape despite the modern roads nearby. The combination of museum collections and temple fabric allows Wanshou to present Buddhist, courtly and artistic history within one unusually well-preserved compound. Repeated courtyards reveal the close visual relationship between monastic order and imperial architectural taste.
