Build a trip to Beijing
Capital Museum presents the history and culture of Beijing through archaeology, urban artifacts, painting, porcelain, jade, Buddhist sculpture and folk traditions. The modern building uses a monumental bronze-colored cylinder and a broad stone volume to symbolize the relationship between ancient objects and the contemporary capital. Permanent galleries trace the city from early settlement through its development as an imperial center, while specialized collections reveal the craftsmanship and religious life associated with different periods. Models, maps and excavated material explain how Beijing’s walls, palaces, temples and neighborhoods changed as dynasties rebuilt the city on overlapping plans. Folk displays add the texture of festivals, domestic objects and local trades to a history often dominated by court architecture. The museum therefore complements sites such as the Forbidden City by showing the wider urban society, regional archaeology and everyday culture that supported the political capital.
