Build a trip to Beijing
The Summer Palace is an imperial garden centered on Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, where palaces, temples, pavilions and long corridors are composed within a vast landscape of water and mountain. The eastern palace zone contains formal administrative and residential spaces, while the hill and lake create broad scenic sequences shaped by bridges, islands and borrowed views. Major landmarks such as the Tower of Buddhist Incense, Long Corridor and Marble Boat reveal different aspects of Qing court life and garden design. The garden draws on landscapes and architectural traditions from across China, transforming them into an idealized imperial world on the outskirts of Beijing. Kunming Lake was expanded and shaped to support both scenery and water management, while Longevity Hill provides a symbolic and visual center. Destruction in the nineteenth century and later reconstruction added historical layers, but the site remains the fullest surviving expression of a Qing royal landscape garden.
