Build a trip to Beijing
The Old Summer Palace, or Yuanmingyuan, was an immense Qing imperial garden complex northwest of Beijing composed of lakes, islands, palaces, temples and themed landscapes. Chinese garden traditions were combined with selected European-style fountains and stone buildings designed with Jesuit participation. Much of the complex was destroyed and looted in 1860, leaving scattered foundations, waterways and the famous stone remains of the Western Mansions across a vast public park. Its ruins carry meanings that extend beyond garden history. Surviving fragments evoke the extraordinary scale of imperial collecting and landscape design, while the destruction became a powerful symbol in modern Chinese memory of foreign invasion and national loss. Reconstructed water systems, archaeological zones and preserved ruins allow the site to be read simultaneously as a former courtly world, an open landscape and a place of historical mourning.
