Build a trip to Xiamen
Hulishan Fortress is a late Qing coastal defense complex overlooking the Taiwan Strait, best known for its large Krupp cannon and preserved military structures. Gun platforms, tunnels, barracks and exhibitions explain how Xiamen responded to changing naval technology and foreign pressure in the nineteenth century. The sea view is dramatic, but the historical interpretation distinguishes the site from an ordinary coastal park. Demonstrations or ceremonies may follow changing schedules, so visitors should treat them as optional and allow time to explore the fortifications themselves, including stairs and exposed outdoor areas. The fortress was built during a period when Qing coastal defenses were adopting imported industrial technology. Its enormous German-made Krupp cannon stands beside tunnels, ammunition spaces and traditional fortification elements, embodying the uneven modernization of late imperial military systems. The commanding sea position connects the machinery with Xiamen’s strategic role at the entrance to a major maritime harbor.
