Build a trip to Lijiang
Baisha was an early political and cultural center of the Naxi people before the rise of the better-known old town of Lijiang. Its low-rise lanes, temple compounds and surviving Baisha murals preserve connections between Naxi traditions, Tibetan Buddhism and Chinese artistic influence, while Jade Dragon Snow Mountain frames the settlement. Tourism is growing, but the town still feels less compressed than central Lijiang when visitors move beyond the café-lined core. A thoughtful visit gives priority to the murals and older residential fabric, respects local homes and avoids reducing Baisha to a quieter backdrop for fashion photography. Baisha’s murals combine Buddhist, Daoist and local religious imagery, reflecting the cultural exchange that shaped the Naxi region. Temple compounds and modest stone houses preserve links with the period when the settlement served as a center of the Mu rulers. The town’s lower scale and proximity to the mountain give its heritage a different character from the dense commercial lanes of Lijiang Old Town.
