Du Fu Thatched Cottage is a memorial garden and literary museum dedicated to the Tang poet Du Fu, who lived in Chengdu during a period of displacement caused by rebellion. The original dwelling did not survive, but later generations created halls, reconstructed thatched buildings, gardens and commemorative spaces around the location associated with many of his best-known poems. Bamboo, streams and shaded paths evoke the modest rural setting that appears in his writing and create an atmosphere distinct from a conventional museum gallery. Stone inscriptions, manuscripts, sculpture and exhibitions trace Du Fu’s life, historical circumstances and influence on Chinese poetry. The site also shows how literary memory can shape landscape over centuries, as admirers repeatedly rebuilt and expanded a temporary home into a national cultural monument. Its emotional power comes from the relationship between the poet’s concern for ordinary suffering and the carefully cultivated tranquility of the garden that now bears his name.
