Build a trip to Beijing
Red Brick Art Museum is a contemporary art institution in northeast Beijing whose architecture is formed almost entirely from red brick. Designed by Dong Yugan, the complex uses arches, vaults, circular openings, courtyards and water to create a labyrinth of galleries and garden spaces. Light moves across rough masonry and framed views, making the building itself an evolving visual experience rather than a neutral container for exhibitions. The garden extends this architectural language through brick paths, enclosed pools and structures that recall fragments of classical Chinese landscape design without directly copying historic forms. Contemporary artworks appear within spaces that shift between interior and exterior, monument and ruin. This close integration of exhibition, material and landscape gives the museum a distinct identity within Beijing’s broader contemporary art scene. Brick becomes structure, surface, screen and landscape element throughout the entire composition.
