Hehua Chi is a lotus-centered waterscape within the celebrated West Lake scene known as Breeze-Ruffled Lotus at Quyuan Garden. Broad ponds are crossed by low bridges and wooden walkways, bringing visitors close to dense stands of lotus whose round leaves, seedpods and pink or white flowers fill the water in summer. Willows, pavilions and glimpses of distant hills layer the composition, while irregular shorelines ensure that the pools reveal themselves gradually rather than as one formal basin. The name Quyuan recalls a Southern Song workshop that brewed official wine near the lake, where the fragrance of fermentation was poetically joined with lotus carried on the breeze. Later landscaping expanded the scene into one of West Lake’s traditional Ten Scenes, celebrated in imperial inscriptions, painting and verse. Lotus itself carries strong cultural associations with purity because its flowers rise clean above muddy water, making the plant both visual subject and moral emblem. Hehua Chi preserves this union of seasonal botany, literary memory and designed scenery, turning a mass flowering into a distinctly Hangzhou expression of cultivated nature.
