Yue Fei Temple and Mausoleum commemorate the Southern Song general Yue Fei on the northern shore of West Lake. The complex centers on a formal shrine hall containing a commanding image of the general, with painted and inscribed references to loyalty, military achievement and his campaigns against the Jin. Beyond the temple court lie the tombs of Yue Fei and his son Yue Yun, approached through stone figures and enclosed by cypress. The architecture has been rebuilt repeatedly, but the site has served as the principal focus of his public memory for centuries. Yue Fei was executed in 1142 after political conflict at the Southern Song court and later rehabilitated as an exemplar of devotion to the state. Kneeling iron figures representing Qin Hui and others blamed for his death embody the moral judgment attached to the story, while famous calligraphy and patriotic texts reinforce its educational role. The site therefore presents history through a powerful tradition of commemoration rather than detached biography. Temple, tomb and ritual symbolism reveal how successive generations transformed a contested commander into one of China’s most enduring national heroes.
