Build a trip to Chengdu
Daci Temple is a historic Buddhist monastery in central Chengdu whose origins reach back many centuries and whose reputation became closely associated with the Tang monk Xuanzang. Traditional accounts connect the temple with his ordination before the journey that later inspired one of East Asia’s most famous religious and literary narratives. The present compound contains halls, courtyards, Buddhist images and mature trees within a district now surrounded by the contemporary architecture of Taikoo Li. The temple once formed part of a much larger religious and cultural institution known for teaching, ritual and public gatherings. Repeated destruction and rebuilding changed its physical fabric, yet the continuing monastic presence preserves a spiritual center within Chengdu’s commercial core. The juxtaposition of tiled roofs, incense and quiet courtyards with modern retail lanes has become one of the city’s clearest examples of historical continuity inside rapid urban redevelopment.
