Build a trip to Beijing
Yonghe Temple is a major Tibetan Buddhist monastery in northeast Beijing, created from a former princely residence associated with the Yongzheng Emperor. Yellow-glazed roofs, red walls and a long sequence of halls combine imperial architectural forms with Tibetan Buddhist imagery and ritual. The complex culminates in the towering Maitreya statue carved from a single sandalwood trunk, one of its most remarkable artistic and devotional objects. The temple reflects the Qing court’s political and religious relationships with Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhist communities. Thangkas, bronze images, prayer objects and multilingual inscriptions demonstrate a cultural world extending far beyond Beijing. Continued monastic practice and heavy popular devotion keep the compound alive, making it both an imperial monument and one of the capital’s most active sacred spaces. The progression of halls gradually shifts from princely architecture toward an increasingly dense Buddhist ceremonial world.
