Ditan Park preserves the Temple of Earth, a Ming and Qing ritual complex where emperors offered sacrifices to the earth. Its principal altar is a square, open platform whose geometry, colors and numerical symbolism express the traditional association between earth and the square form. Gates, storehouses and ancient cypresses survive within a broad walled precinct that later became a public park, giving the site both ceremonial gravity and neighborhood vitality. The park forms a conceptual counterpart to the round Temple of Heaven in southern Beijing. While the altar itself is austere, long avenues and mature trees reveal the scale required for imperial processions and ritual preparation. Seasonal fairs and the famous golden ginkgo landscape have added modern public traditions, but the underlying plan still communicates a cosmology in which political authority was tied to balanced relations between heaven, earth and the emperor.
