Build a trip to Beijing
The National Museum of China occupies the eastern side of Tiananmen Square and holds vast collections covering Chinese archaeology, history, art and modern political development. Monumental galleries present objects from prehistoric cultures, bronze-age states, imperial dynasties and the revolutionary era, while painting, porcelain, jade and sculpture reveal changing artistic traditions. The building combines a 1950s civic façade with greatly expanded modern interiors designed for exhibitions on a national scale. Masterpieces such as ancient ritual bronzes and painted pottery place individual objects within the formation of Chinese civilization and state power. Modern-history galleries construct a political narrative extending from late imperial crisis to the People’s Republic, giving the institution a memorial role as well as a scholarly one. Its location opposite the Great Hall of the People makes the museum part of the symbolic architecture of Tiananmen Square and the contemporary nation.
