Build a trip to Beijing
Tiananmen Square is the monumental civic space at the center of modern Beijing, framed by Tiananmen Gate, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China and the Zhengyangmen axis. Its enormous paved expanse was shaped in the twentieth century for state ceremony, mass gathering and national commemoration. The Monument to the People’s Heroes and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall occupy the central field, giving political memory a permanent architectural presence. The square also stands on the historical approach to the imperial city, linking the Forbidden City with Qianmen along Beijing’s ancient central axis. This overlap gives the space a dual identity: it is both the symbolic heart of the People’s Republic and part of a much older ceremonial geography. Its scale, strict symmetry and surrounding institutions make it less an ordinary public square than a carefully constructed national stage.
