Build a trip to Xi An
Constructed during the Ming Dynasty under Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, this is the most complete and best-preserved ancient city wall in China. It stands 12 meters high and stretches 13.7 kilometers, forming a rectangular fortification around the old city center. Walking or cycling atop the wide ramparts offers a striking contrast between the traditional tiled roofs of the inner city and the shimmering skyscrapers of modern Xi'an. The atmosphere is particularly magical during sunset when the watchtowers are illuminated. Expert Recommendation: Enter via the South Gate (Yongning Gate) for the most ceremonial architecture. Pro Tip: Rent a bicycle at the South Gate to complete the full loop in about 90-120 minutes; avoid the midday heat as there is very little shade on the wall.
Zhuque Market is where the 'real' Xi'an eats
Biang Biang noodles are famous for their name—the most complex Chinese character—and their wide, belt-like shape
Yongning Gate is the most grand and meticulously restored of the four main gates of the Xi'an City Wall
This is no ordinary Starbucks; it’s a high-end Reserve store housed in a stunning building that overlooks the Ancient City Wall's South Gate
