About
The Vienna State Opera is one of the world's premier opera houses, completed in 1869 in the neo-Renaissance style and rebuilt after World War II with meticulous attention to its original grandeur. The opera house stages approximately 300 performances per year featuring the world's finest singers, conductors, and productions. Standing-room tickets are sold daily at remarkably affordable prices, making world-class opera accessible to all. Guided tours of the ornate foyer, grand staircase, and auditorium are available when performances are not scheduled. The Vienna Philharmonic uses this house as its home, and New Year's concerts from this stage are broadcast globally.

Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper)
Opened in 1869 with Mozart’s 'Don Giovanni,' this Neo-Renaissance building is the epicenter of the music world. The interior is breathtaking, featuring a grand staircase, marble statues, and a gold-and-red auditorium known for its perfect acoustics. The atmosphere during a performance is electric, with a tradition of excellence that dates back to Mahler and Strauss. Expert recommendation: Take a guided tour to see the backstage areas and the opulent Tea Salon, normally closed to the public. Practical pro tip: If you're on a budget, standing room tickets are sold at a very low price 80 minutes before each performance—arrive early to join the queue behind the building.
Café Sacher
This is the birthplace of the world’s most famous chocolate cake, the Original Sacher Torte, created in 1832. The cafe is the height of imperial luxury, with red damask walls, crystal chandeliers, and white-gloved service. It offers a sensory plunge into the opulence of the Habsburg era. Expert recommendation: The Sacher Torte is best enjoyed with a generous dollop of 'Schlagobers' (unsweetened whipped cream) and a 'Wiener Melange' coffee. Practical pro tip: The main cafe line is usually very long, but the 'Sacher Eck' on the corner of the same building often has a shorter wait and serves the exact same cake. You can also buy whole cakes in beautiful wooden boxes as premium souvenirs.
Kärntner Straße
This is Vienna’s primary pedestrian shopping artery, connecting the State Opera to Stephansplatz. While now dominated by international brands, it still retains several traditional Viennese establishments, such as J. & L. Lobmeyr glassware. The street is always bustling with street performers and tourists. Expert recommendation: Duck into the small side streets (like Annagasse) to find quieter, more authentic medieval architecture and charming coffee houses. Practical pro tip: Avoid the tourist-trap souvenir shops on the main drag; for more authentic Viennese crafts, visit the Dorotheum auction house nearby. The street is best visited in the early evening when the shops are still open and the streetlights come on.
Bitzinger Würstelstand (Albertina)
This is arguably the most famous sausage stand in the world, located right next to the Albertina Museum and the State Opera. Bitzinger has elevated street food to a cult status, serving high-quality sausages with premium condiments and even Moët & Chandon champagne. The contrast of eating a sausage on a silver tray while looking at the Opera is uniquely Viennese. Expert recommendation: Order a 'Käsekrainer' (cheese-filled sausage) 'a la dente' (sliced with mustard and horseradish) or in a 'Hot Dog' bun. Practical pro tip: Expect a line, especially after opera performances or late at night. It’s one of the few places in the center open until the early hours of the morning (4:00 AM).
