Build a trip to Vienna
About
Schönbrunn Palace is the Habsburg Empire's crown jewel, a UNESCO World Heritage baroque palace with 1,441 rooms set in 186 acres of manicured gardens. Built in the early 18th century as the imperial summer residence, it served emperors from Maria Theresa to Franz Joseph I. The Grand Tour reveals opulently decorated state rooms including the Great Gallery and Hall of Mirrors where Mozart performed at age six. The palace gardens rise to the Gloriette, a hilltop monument offering panoramic views over Vienna. The on-site coach museum, mazes, and Palm House make this a full-day destination.

Gloriette (Schönbrunn)
Perched on the crest of a 60-meter hill overlooking the palace, the Gloriette was built in 1775 as a 'temple of fame' and a viewing terrace. It serves as the crowning glory of the Schönbrunn gardens. The Neo-Classical colonnade offers a majestic framing of the city. Expert recommendation: The central glazed hall now houses a café where you can enjoy a 'Sisi Torte' with a view fit for an emperor. Practical pro tip: While the climb up the hill is free and provides great views, you have to pay a small fee to access the rooftop viewing platform of the Gloriette itself. It’s particularly beautiful at sunset.

Technisches Museum (Technical)
Situated near Schönbrunn Palace, this museum showcases Austria's contributions to science and technology within a grand historicist building. The collection is vast, featuring everything from giant steam engines and early aircraft to the latest in green energy and robotics. It is a highly tactile experience with many interactive stations designed for all ages. Expert recommendation: The 'High Voltage' demonstration is a must-see, where lightning is literally made in the hall to the sound of music. Practical pro tip: It is exceptionally family-friendly with dedicated play-and-learn areas for toddlers (the 'Mini' area). Given its proximity to Schönbrunn, it’s a great indoor alternative if the weather turns bad during your palace visit.

Palm House (Schönbrunn)
Completed in 1882, the Palmenhaus is the largest of its kind in continental Europe. This iron-and-glass structure is divided into three climate zones: a 'cold' house, a 'temperate' house, and a 'tropical' house. Walking through it is a sensory journey through diverse flora, from Mediterranean palms to exotic jungle plants. The architecture is a prime example of late 19th-century engineering. Expert recommendation: Look for the 'Sisi Palm,' a plant with a direct lineage to the era of the Empress. Practical pro tip: It can get extremely humid inside the tropical section, so dress in layers. It requires a separate ticket from the palace tour, but it is much quieter and offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.
Schönbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten)
Founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz Stephan, this is the oldest zoo in the world. It managed to preserve its Baroque charm while becoming one of the most modern and animal-friendly zoos today. The central breakfast pavilion is a relic of the imperial era, while the giant panda enclosure and rainforest house are world-class. Expert recommendation: The 'Tirolerhof' farm area offers a glimpse into traditional Austrian alpine life and rare livestock breeds. Practical pro tip: Use the entrance near Hietzing U-Bahn station for faster access. It is a massive facility; plan for at least 3-4 hours if you have children. Combine it with a visit to the Schönbrunn Gardens for a full day out.
