Figlmüller (Wollzeile)
Build a trip to Vienna
About
Known as the 'Home of the Schnitzel' since 1905, Figlmüller is a Viennese institution. Their signature Schnitzel is made from high-quality pork, pounded paper-thin, and is famously larger than the plate it’s served on. The atmosphere is cozy and traditional, with dark wood paneling and green velvet accents. Expert recommendation: Order the Figlmüller-Schnitzel with their legendary potato-field salad (Erdäpfelsalat), which has a distinctive sweet-and-sour dressing. Practical pro tip: There are two locations nearby; the original in Wollzeile does not serve beer (only wine and juice), while the Lugeck location does. Reservations are mandatory and often booked out weeks in advance; try for an early lunch at 11:30 AM to snag a walk-in spot.

Lugeck
Operated by the Figlmüller family, Lugeck brings traditional Viennese tavern culture into a beautiful, light-filled 19th-century building (the Regensburger Hof). It offers a more modern take on Austrian classics, such as Schnitzel and Tafelspitz, along with a great selection of craft beers. The decor is a chic blend of traditional wood and modern industrial elements. Expert recommendation: Try the 'Crispy Fried Chicken' (Backhendl) or their modern salads if you want something lighter than a Schnitzel. Practical pro tip: It is much easier to get a table here than at the original Figlmüller, and they offer a full bar. It’s a great spot for groups as the space is much larger and more accommodating.
Mozarthaus Vienna
Mozart lived in this apartment from 1784 to 1787, during his most productive years and where he composed 'The Marriage of Figaro.' It is the only one of his many Viennese residences that has been preserved. The museum spans four floors, providing insight into the composer's daily life, his social circle, and the 18th-century Viennese context. Expert recommendation: The audio guide is exceptional and included in the price; it plays snippets of the music composed in each room. Practical pro tip: The entrance is tucked away in a narrow alleyway behind St. Stephen's Cathedral. Combine this with a visit to a Mozart concert in the nearby Sala Terrena for a 'total' Mozart experience.
Anker Clock
This Art Nouveau bridge-clock, built by Franz Matsch between 1911 and 1917, spans a narrow alley in Vienna's oldest square. Over the course of 12 hours, 12 historical figures (including Marcus Aurelius and Maria Theresa) move across the clock face. The design is rich in copper, marble, and mosaics. Expert recommendation: Be there exactly at 12:00 noon, when all 12 figures parade past to the accompaniment of music from different eras. Practical pro tip: Arrive 10 minutes early for the noon show, as a small crowd usually gathers. At any other hour, only one figure moves, which is much less impressive. The square itself, Hoher Markt, also features Roman ruins visible through windows in the pavement.

St. Stephen's Cathedral
St. Stephen's Cathedral, known as Stephansdom, is Vienna's defining landmark and the seat of the Archbishop. Construction began in 1137 and continued over centuries, resulting in a Gothic masterpiece with a distinctive multicolored geometric tile roof featuring the Habsburg double eagle. The South Tower, climbed by 343 steps, offers panoramic city views, while catacombs beneath the cathedral house skeletal remains of plague victims and Habsburg organs in copper urns. The cathedral's interior contains remarkable works of Gothic art including the carved pulpit by Anton Pilgram and the marble tomb of Emperor Frederick III. Daily masses continue in this living church.
