Donauinsel (Danube Island)
Build a trip to Vienna
About
This 21km long artificial island was created in the 1970s as part of Vienna's flood protection system but has become the city's favorite playground. It features beaches, bars, sports facilities, and a network of trails for cycling and skating. During the summer, it is the site of the 'Donauinselfest,' Europe's largest free open-air music festival. Expert recommendation: Rent a bike and ride to the southern tip of the island for a truly peaceful escape from the city. Practical pro tip: The area near the 'Copa Cagrana' (U1 station Donauinsel) is the most commercialized part with many bars; if you want nature and quiet, head further north or south. Entry is completely free.

UNO City (Vienna International Centre)
Vienna is one of the four official seats of the United Nations. Designed by Johann Staber and opened in 1979, the 'UNO City' is a massive complex of Y-shaped buildings with extraterritorial status. It represents Vienna’s role as a bridge between East and West during the Cold War. The sensory experience is one of international diplomacy and modernist efficiency. Expert recommendation: The guided tours are the only way to get inside; you might even see a conference in progress. Practical pro tip: You must bring a valid passport to enter, as you are technically leaving Austrian territory. The security check is similar to an airport, so arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time.
Donauturm (Danube Tower)
Standing at 252 meters, the Danube Tower is the tallest structure in Austria. Built in 1964 for the Vienna International Garden Show, it offers a 360-degree view of the city, the Danube, and the Vienna Woods. The express elevator takes you to the observation deck in just 35 seconds. The vibe is mid-century modern with spectacular panoramic potential. Expert recommendation: Have a meal at the rotating restaurant at the top; it takes 26 minutes for a full rotation, giving you a changing view with every course. Practical pro tip: Check the weather forecast before heading out; visibility can be poor on overcast days. It is easily accessible via the U1 line and a short bus ride or a walk through the beautiful Donaupark.
Ullmann's Zuckerbäckerei
Ullmann's is a modern take on the traditional Viennese pastry shop, located in the 2nd district. It combines a sleek, contemporary interior with world-class pastry craftsmanship. They are known for their exquisite cakes, handmade pralines, and a breakfast menu that is considered one of the best in the area. Expert recommendation: Their breakfast towers for two are a visual and culinary feast. Don't leave without trying one of their signature éclairs. Practical pro tip: It's a great spot to visit if you are staying near the Prater or the Messe Wien. It's much less crowded than the first-district cafes but offers the same (if not higher) level of quality. They also offer pastry-making workshops if you book in advance.
Schweizerhaus (Prater)
Schweizerhaus is more than a restaurant; it’s a Viennese cultural phenomenon located in the Prater amusement park. It features one of the city's largest and most famous beer gardens. The atmosphere is loud, joyful, and quintessentially summer in Vienna. They are famous for Budweiser beer and their massive pork knuckles. Expert recommendation: The 'Stelze' (roasted pork knuckle) is a must—the skin is incredibly crispy. It is usually sold by weight, so specify if you want a smaller one. Practical pro tip: Note that Schweizerhaus is only open from March 15th to October 31st. It’s almost always crowded, but the turn-over is fast. Cash is king here, so bring enough for your Stelze and several rounds of beer.
