Yakiniku Jumbo Hanare
Build a trip to Tokyo
About
Jumbo Hanare is a legendary name among yakiniku enthusiasts. They are pioneers of 'rare cut' yakiniku, serving parts of the cow you won't find at standard shops. Their signature dish is 'Noharayaki'—a large, thin slice of sirloin that is lightly seared for a few seconds and then dipped into a bowl of premium raw egg yolk, similar to sukiyaki. The sauce is perfectly balanced, and the meat quality (A5 Kuroge Wagyu) is exceptional. Getting a seat at the 'Hanare' (annex) requires booking exactly one month in advance. It is widely considered one of the top three yakiniku experiences in the city.

Kanda Myojin Shrine
With a history dating back 1,300 years, this shrine was a favorite of the Tokugawa Shoguns. Today, it is famous for its unique blend of ancient tradition and modern 'Otaku' culture due to its proximity to Akihabara. It is the go-to place for 'IT Charms' (designed to protect computers and gadgets) and frequently collaborates with anime series for its festivals. The main hall is a vibrant vermillion color, and the 'Kanda Matsuri' held here is one of Tokyo's three major Shinto festivals, featuring massive processions of portable shrines (mikoshi) through the streets.
Yushima Tenjin Shrine
A highly respected Shinto shrine dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the deity of scholars and learning. It is a pilgrimage site for Japanese students, who hang thousands of 'Ema' (wooden prayer tablets) to ask for success in school entrance exams. The shrine is also one of Tokyo's top spots for plum blossoms (Ume) in February; its 300 plum trees draw massive crowds for the annual festival. The architecture is beautiful, featuring intricate wood carvings and a peaceful courtyard that feels far removed from the nearby bustle of Ueno.
Kanda Yabu Soba
One of the 'Big Three' soba lineages in Tokyo, Yabu Soba dates back to 1880. The restaurant is housed in a beautiful, rebuilt traditional building with a small courtyard garden. They are famous for their 'Seiro Soba'—thin, handmade buckwheat noodles with a slightly greenish tint, served with a very concentrated, salty dipping sauce. The unique charm of the place is the 'Okami' (hostess) who 'sings' the orders to the kitchen in a haunting, traditional chant. It is a place to appreciate the deep, understated elegance of Japanese culinary tradition. Best enjoyed with a side of their famous tempura.
Akihabara Electric Town
Originally a post-WWII black market for radio parts, Akihabara evolved into the global mecca for 'Otaku' (geek) culture. The district is a sensory overload of neon lights, 8-bit music, and multi-story shops like Mandarake and Animate, which sell everything from rare anime figurines to retro video games. It is also the birthplace of 'Maid Cafes', where waitresses dress as anime characters. On Sundays, the main thoroughfare 'Chuo-dori' becomes a pedestrian zone, making it easier to navigate the crowds of hobbyists and electronics hunters from around the world.
