About
Tokyo's oldest and most beloved temple, Senso-ji was founded in 628 AD and draws over 30 million visitors annually to its iconic Kaminarimon Thunder Gate and the bustling Nakamise shopping street lined with traditional crafts and snacks. The massive incense burner in the main hall fills the air with sacred smoke that worshippers wave over themselves for good health, while the five-story pagoda and main hall glow magnificently under evening illumination. Arriving at dawn reveals the temple in peaceful solitude before the crowds descend, offering a meditative experience in the heart of Asakusa.

Nakamise-dori Street
One of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, stretching 250 meters from the Kaminarimon Gate to the main hall of Senso-ji Temple. It is lined with approximately 90 small stalls that have been family-run for generations. This is the best place to find traditional Japanese souvenirs like 'Uchiwa' fans, kimonos, and 'Edo-kiriko' glass. The real draw, however, is the freshly made street food—don't miss the 'Ningyo-yaki' (small cakes filled with red bean paste shaped like local landmarks) and the warm, crunchy rice crackers.
Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku
Established in 1954, this is Tokyo's oldest onigiri (rice ball) specialty shop. While onigiri is often seen as simple convenience food, Yadoroku treats it as an art form, using top-quality rice from different prefectures and crisp Edo-mae seaweed. You sit at a counter similar to a high-end sushi bar and choose from fillings like salted salmon, pickled plum, or shrimp with miso. It has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, proving that simplicity, when perfected, is world-class. It’s a fantastic, affordable way to experience a staple of Japanese culinary history.
Asakusa Imahan
Founded in 1895, this is one of Tokyo's most prestigious houses for Sukiyaki and Shabu-shabu. Located in the historic Asakusa district, it specializes in 'Kobe Beef' and other top-tier Wagyu. The restaurant is famous for its 'Sukiyaki Bento' and its refined, multi-course meals. The dining rooms are traditional Japanese style, offering a quiet, formal atmosphere that contrasts with the busy streets of Asakusa. While dinner can be very expensive, their lunch sets (like the Wagyu Sukiyaki Bowl) offer a taste of their legendary beef at a more approachable price point. A true Tokyo classic.

Kappabashi Street
Stretching between Ueno and Asakusa, Kappabashi is a specialty district catering to the restaurant industry. It is globally famous for its 'Shokuhin Sampuru'—the hyper-realistic plastic food models seen in Japanese restaurant windows. Visitors can buy everything from plastic sushi keychains to full-sized ramen bowls. The street is also a mecca for professional chefs, offering high-grade Japanese knives, traditional ceramics, and industrial-grade kitchenware. Look for the giant 'Chef' statue on top of the Niimi building to mark the start of your journey through this unique shopping thoroughfare.
