Kichijoji Satou
Build a trip to Tokyo
About
While Satou is a high-end steakhouse upstairs, it is world-famous for the ground-floor butcher shop's 'Gensou Menchi-katsu'—deep-fried minced meat cutlets made from premium Matsusaka Wagyu beef. Every day, a long line forms in the Kichijoji Sun Road arcade for these juicy, onion-filled crispy delights. They are best eaten hot while walking around the neighborhood. If you want a full meal, the restaurant upstairs serves incredible Wagyu steaks at much lower prices than Ginza establishments. The Menchi-katsu often sells out by mid-afternoon, so arrive early.

Inokashira Park
A beloved local favorite located in the trendy Kichijoji neighborhood. The park centers around a large pond where visitors can rent swan boats or rowboats. It is particularly famous for its cherry blossoms, which drape low over the water, creating a pink canopy in spring. The park also houses the Inokashira Park Zoo and the Ghibli Museum on its southern edge. It has a more relaxed, creative vibe than central Tokyo parks, often featuring local artists and musicians performing along the paths, and is a perfect spot for people-watching.
Ghibli Museum (Mitaka)
Designed by Hayao Miyazaki, this museum’s motto is 'Let’s get lost together'. It avoids the commercial feel of a typical theme park, instead focusing on the magic of hand-drawn animation. You can explore a life-sized 'Catbus' (for children), see original storyboards, and watch exclusive short films at the Saturn Theater that are never released to the public. The building itself is a whimsical maze of spiral stairs, hidden doors, and rooftop gardens where a giant Robot Soldier from 'Castle in the Sky' keeps watch. Tickets must be purchased in advance via a rigorous lottery/online system.
Tonkatsu Narikura
Regularly ranked as the #1 Tonkatsu in all of Japan on food review sites. Unlike traditional deep-frying, Narikura uses a unique low-temperature frying method with high-quality lard, resulting in a pale, snowy-white breading that is exceptionally light and crispy. The pork, often sourced from rare breeds like 'Tokyo X,' remains incredibly juicy and tender. Since moving to its current location in Minami-Asagaya, it operates on a strict online reservation system via 'Omakase.' It is a gourmet pilgrimage for those seeking the absolute peak of fried pork craftsmanship.
Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
This outdoor museum is a sprawling park filled with 30 relocated and restored historic buildings that tell the story of Tokyo's architectural evolution from the 17th to the 20th century. You can walk through the house of a wealthy politician, explore a traditional 'Sento' (public bath), and enter a nostalgic Showa-era stationery shop. The 'East Zone' is particularly evocative, designed to look like an old Tokyo commercial street. It served as a major inspiration for the background art in Studio Ghibli's 'Spirited Away,' making it a pilgrimage site for animation fans.
