Located on the famous Yongkang food street, Smoothie House is a rival to Ice Monster and a favorite for its generous toppings and vibrant outdoor seating area. Their shaved ice is exceptionally fluffy and flavored throughout with fruit juice. The atmosphere is tourist-friendly and bustling, with people from all over the world enjoying bowls under the yellow umbrellas. The sensory experience is a visual and sugary delight. Expert recommendation: The 'Super Mango Snowflake Ice' with a scoop of sorbet on top is the best-seller. Pro tip: There are two locations on the same street; if the ground floor of the main branch is too crowded, head to the second location just a few doors down. It’s an essential stop on any Yongkang Street food tour.
This is the original branch of the world-famous Michelin-starred dumpling empire, where the global craze for 'Xiao Long Bao' (soup dumplings) began. The atmosphere is bustling, efficient, and legendary, with an open kitchen where you can watch dozens of chefs meticulously folding dumplings with exactly 18 pleats. The sensory experience is defined by the thin, delicate skin of the dumplings bursting with savory, hot broth. Expert recommendation: Aside from the classic pork soup dumplings, try the shrimp and pork shao mai and the decadent chocolate lava dumplings for dessert. Pro tip: This location is for takeout and limited seating; for a full sit-down experience with shorter waits, consider the nearby Xinsheng branch or the Taipei 101 location. Expect waits of 60-90 minutes during peak hours—grab a number and explore the nearby Yongkang Street while you wait.
The globally celebrated Taiwan-born restaurant that revolutionized xiao long bao soup dumplings with obsessive attention to precision—each dumpling must contain exactly 18 folds and weigh between 20-21 grams—has earned Michelin stars in Hong Kong and multiple Best Restaurant of the Year awards worldwide while maintaining accessible pricing that makes quality accessible to all. The open kitchen behind glass allows diners to watch the choreographed efficiency of a hundred skilled dough folders working with extraordinary speed and consistency, while the menu extends beyond the iconic soup dumplings to include shrimp and pork wontons in chili oil, braised beef noodle soup, and steamed pork chops with rice. Lines form before opening at all locations, but the Xinyi flagship with its spacious seating minimizes the wait.
Established in 1963, this humble eatery has grown into one of Taipei’s most iconic beef noodle institutions, consistently featured in the Michelin Bib Gourmand guide. They are famous for their rich, spicy Szechuan-style 'Hong Shao' (red-braised) broth that has been simmered for hours with beef bones and medicinal herbs. The atmosphere is no-frills, crowded, and authentic, with the steam from the large noodle vats filling the room. The sensory experience is a bold, savory, and spicy kick, with beef that is so tender it falls apart at the touch of a chopstick. Expert recommendation: Order the 'Spicy Tendon and Beef Noodle Soup' to experience the two different textures. Pro tip: Be prepared to queue outside on the sidewalk; however, the line moves quickly. If you can't handle spice, ask for the clear broth version, though the spicy one is their signature.
Mountain and Sea House is a Michelin-starred restaurant dedicated to preserving and elevating 'Ban-De'—traditional Taiwanese banquet cuisine. Housed in a reconstructed colonial-style mansion, the restaurant uses only organic, heirloom ingredients from local farmers. The atmosphere is one of grand heritage and refined elegance. The sensory experience is a visual and culinary spectacle, with dishes like the 'Five-Color Platter' showcasing intricate traditional techniques. Expert recommendation: The 'Ancient Style Smoked Chicken' and the organic vegetable sprouts are must-orders. Pro tip: This is arguably the best place in the city to experience the highest form of Taiwanese culinary art. Reservations are essential and should be made well in advance. It’s a popular choice for high-level business dinners and special celebrations.
