Build a trip to Taipei
Shizilin is an old-school shopping complex in Ximending that feels like a trip back to the 1980s. It is famous for its dense concentration of mobile phone repair shops, tailors specializing in custom-made suits and Qipaos, and its legendary food court on the top floor. The atmosphere is gritty, busy, and unpretentiously local, standing in sharp contrast to the polished malls nearby. The sensory experience is a mix of neon lights, the sound of sewing machines, and the savory smells of traditional Wanhua snacks. Expert recommendation: This is a hidden gem for finding affordable, high-quality tailoring services if you are staying in Taipei for a few days. Pro tip: Head to the upper floor for 'Golden Lion Dim Sum,' one of the few places in Taipei that still uses traditional push-carts for serving. The building can be a bit confusing to navigate, so don't be afraid to ask locals for directions.
While many shops carry the 'Yong He' name, this Ximending branch is a reliable 24-hour spot to experience a classic Taiwanese breakfast at any time of day or night. The menu features all the staples: sweet and savory soy milk, 'You Tiao' (dough sticks), and egg crepes (Dan Bing). The atmosphere is no-frills, fast, and authentic. The sensory experience is a warm, comforting bowl of tradition amidst the modern neon of Ximen. Expert recommendation: Dip a crispy 'You Tiao' into a hot bowl of sweet soy milk for the ultimate local comfort snack. Pro tip: It’s a perfect, budget-friendly 'recovery' meal after a night of exploring Ximending’s bars. The service is brisk, so know what you want to order before you reach the counter.
Mala Hot Pot is a legendary 'all-you-can-eat' institution in Ximending, famous for its spicy Szechuan broth and high-quality ingredients. The atmosphere is boisterous and festive, with a massive self-service bar featuring premium meats, seafood, and a wall of Haagen-Dazs ice cream. The sensory experience is a DIY feast of bubbling, aromatic spices and customizable dipping sauces. Expert recommendation: Focus on the Angust beef and the fresh scallops; the spicy broth is the signature, but the vegetable/collagen broth is great for balance. Pro tip: You must book a table in advance, especially for dinner, as it is perpetually packed with local students and tourists. The dining time is strictly limited to two hours, so manage your time well at the buffet bar.
Known as the 'Harajuku of Taipei,' Ximending is the epicenter of youth culture, street fashion, and pop subcultures in Taiwan. This vibrant pedestrian zone is filled with neon billboards, cosplay, street performers, and a vast array of themed cafes and boutiques. The atmosphere is electric and unapologetically modern, providing a sharp contrast to the nearby historic Longshan Temple. The sensory experience is one of visual overload and loud K-pop or J-pop soundtracks. Expert recommendation: Look for the 'Red House,' a historic octagonal theater that now houses creative design boutiques and a lively LGBT-friendly bar area. Pro tip: This is the best place to find unique Taiwanese souvenirs and trendy apparel. For a classic snack, join the stand-up crowd for Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodles. The area is most vibrant on Friday and Saturday nights.
Hot Star is the pioneer of the 'oversized' fried chicken steak that has become a staple of Taiwan’s night market culture. The chicken is pounded flat, larger than a human face, and fried to a golden, craggy crisp while remaining juicy inside. The sensory experience is the satisfying 'crunch' followed by the aromatic steam of five-spice powder and chili. The atmosphere at the Ximending stall is loud and busy. Expert recommendation: Always ask for the original spicy seasoning to get the authentic flavor. Pro tip: Do not ask them to cut the chicken; keeping it whole preserves the juices and is the traditional way to eat it. The queue is long but efficient. It is the perfect walking snack while exploring the neon-lit alleys of Ximending.
