Shin Yeh Taiwanese Cuisine (A9)
Located in the upscale Mitsukoshi A9 mall, this branch of Shin Yeh represents the pinnacle of traditional Taiwanese 'banquet' cooking. Since 1977, Shin Yeh has been the gatekeeper of authentic local flavors like pan-fried pig’s liver and steamed mud crab with sticky rice. The atmosphere is sophisticated and formal, with large windows overlooking the Xinyi district. The sensory experience is a refined journey through Taiwan's culinary history. Expert recommendation: The 'Pan-fried Pork Liver' is a legendary dish that converted many skeptics with its tender texture and savory glaze. Pro tip: This is the perfect place for a formal 'welcome' dinner for visitors who want to experience the best of Taiwanese culture in a high-end setting. Reservations are a must.
Taipei 101
The iconic 508-meter supertall skyscraper that dominated the global skyline as the world's tallest building from 2004 to 2010 draws visitors to its indoor and outdoor observation decks on the 89th and 91st floors for sweeping views of the Taipei Basin ringed by volcanic mountains, with the central business district's gleaming towers clustered at its feet. The building's bamboo segmented design represents growth and prosperity in Chinese culture, and the 660-tonne golden wind damper inside the building—the world's largest and most visible tuned mass damper—sways gently to counteract typhoon winds and is itself a popular attraction. The ground-floor luxury mall houses flagship stores of virtually every major international luxury brand alongside excellent Taiwanese restaurant options.
Ice Monster (Xinyi)
Ice Monster is credited with inventing the 'Mango Shaved Ice' that has become Taiwan’s national dessert. Unlike traditional crushed ice, their 'snow ice' is shaved from flavored blocks, resulting in a creamy, ribbon-like texture. The atmosphere in the Xinyi district branch is modern, bright, and playful. The sensory experience is a refreshing blast of tropical sweetness and the brain-freeze sensation of the ultra-fine ice. Expert recommendation: The 'Mango Sensation,' featuring fresh mango chunks, mango sorbet, and panna cotta, is their signature. Pro tip: Portions are enormous and easily shared by two or three people. It is the perfect refuge during Taipei’s humid summer afternoons. Expect a wait on weekends and during the peak mango season (summer).
Smith & Hsu
Smith & Hsu is a modern tea house that famously bridges the gap between Eastern tea culture and Western afternoon tea traditions. The atmosphere is minimalist, zen-like, and highly sophisticated. The sensory experience begins with a large tray of tea leaves presented in jars for you to smell and choose your preferred blend. Expert recommendation: They are widely considered to have the best scones in Taipei—thick, buttery, and served with clotted cream and jam. Pro tip: This is a perfect 'afternoon escape' from the Xinyi shopping malls. The 'Scone Cream Tea' set is their most popular offering. Reservations are recommended on weekends as it is a favorite for local tea enthusiasts and couples.
