About
Established in 1827, Sri Mariamman is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, known for her power to cure diseases. Historically, it served as a refuge for new Indian immigrants. The sensory experience is dominated by the 'Gopuram' (entrance tower), a magnificent six-tiered structure adorned with colorful sculptures of deities and mythical beasts. The interior is filled with the scent of jasmine, the sound of ritual bells, and vibrant ceiling murals. Experts recommend visiting during the 'Theemithi' (fire-walking ceremony) held annually in October or November. Pro tip: Admission is free, but you must remove your shoes and dress modestly (covers are provided). There is a small fee if you wish to take professional photos inside the temple grounds.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
Located in the heart of Chinatown, this Tang-style architectural masterpiece was built in 2007 to house what is believed to be the left canine tooth of Buddha. The temple is a sensory overload of gold, red lacquer, and incense smoke, featuring a magnificent 15-foot golden Buddha statue in the main hall. The Sacred Light Hall on the top floor houses the 2-ton solid gold stupa containing the relic. Experts recommend visiting the rooftop garden with its massive Vairocana Buddha Prayer Wheel for a moment of tranquility. Pro tip: Admission is free, but dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered); the temple provides free wraps at the entrance if needed. The 100-Dragon hall is particularly breathtaking during the evening chanting sessions.
Lolla
Lolla is a chic and intimate restaurant on Ann Siang Hill that focuses on Mediterranean-inspired small plates and artisanal ingredients. Historically, it led the trend of 'counter-seating' and communal dining in the area. The sensory experience is raw and sophisticated—the sound of the open kitchen, the industrial-luxe decor, and the incredible taste of their signature 'Sea Urchin Pudding.' Experts recommend sitting at the long zinc counter to watch the chefs at work. Practical pro tip: It is a favorite for local foodies and the creative crowd; reservations are recommended, especially for the limited counter seats. The 'Donut with Lemon Curd' is a must-order for dessert. Its location is perfect for a stroll through the bars of Ann Siang Hill after dinner.
Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice
Endorsed by Anthony Bourdain and awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, Tian Tian is arguably the most famous chicken rice stall in the world. Its secret lies in the rice, which is cooked to oily, aromatic perfection using chicken stock, ginger, and pandan leaves. The sensory experience is simple yet profound—the silky texture of the poached chicken paired with their fiery, zesty chili sauce and dark soy. Experts recommend adding a side of 'Crystal Chicken Feet' or oyster sauce vegetables to round out the meal. Practical pro tip: The queue is long but moves fast; identify the correct line (there are two for ordering and collecting). If the queue is too overwhelming, 'Ah Tai' just a few stalls down is run by a former Tian Tian chef and offers a very similar flavor profile.
Maxwell Food Centre
One of Singapore's most beloved hawker centers, Maxwell Food Centre in Chinatown is home to over 100 stalls serving the full spectrum of Singapore's extraordinary multicultural street food, from Tian Tian's legendary Hainanese chicken rice (which earned a Michelin star) to Zhen Zhen's claypot congee, Maxwell Fuzhou's oyster cake, and dozens of stalls serving char kway teow, laksa, rojak, and freshly pressed sugarcane juice. The colonial-era building's open-air seating under slowly turning ceiling fans and the chorus of hawker calls creates an authentic Singapore atmosphere that air-conditioned food courts can never replicate. A lunch visit surrounded by office workers, tourists, and elderly aunties nursing kopi O coffee is a quintessentially Singapore experience.
