Build a trip to Shanghai
The Wukang Mansion, formerly known as the Normandie Apartments, is a legendary Art Deco landmark designed by the famous Hungarian-Slovak architect László Hudec (often mistakenly attributed to I.M. Pei). Completed in 1924, its distinctive wedge-shaped exterior resembles a great ship anchored at a busy intersection. It was home to many famous Chinese film stars in the 1930s. The building is a symbol of Shanghai's 'Golden Age' and is perhaps the most photographed building in the French Concession. Expert recommendation: The best photo angle is from the sidewalk across the street at the intersection of Wukang Road and Huaihai Road. Pro Tip: The ground floor now features several high-end coffee shops and an exhibition space. Be respectful of the residents as the upper floors remain private apartments. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the 'influencer' crowds that gather for selfies.
