About
Housed in the former building of the Supreme Court of Korea, SeMA preserves its historic facade while featuring a modern, light-filled interior. It focuses on contemporary art and often hosts world-class traveling exhibitions (such as works by Picasso or Edward Hopper). The approach to the museum along the Deoksugung Stonewall Path is one of the most beautiful walks in the city. The atmosphere is intellectual yet accessible, often featuring local Korean artists alongside global icons. Experts recommend visiting the 'Chun Kyung-ja' permanent exhibition, dedicated to one of Korea’s most famous female painters. Pro tip: Admission to the museum-curated exhibitions is often free; the museum cafe on the top floor offers a quiet spot with a lovely view of the surrounding historic district.

Manjok Ohyang Jokbal
As one of Seoul's three most famous Jokbal (pork trotter) establishments, this Michelin Bib Gourmand winner is legendary for its 'five-spice' braising liquid. The meat is remarkably tender, with a skin that is almost jelly-like in texture and a subtle sweetness from the star anise and cinnamon. A unique sensory highlight is the heated brass plates on the tables that keep the pork at the perfect temperature throughout the meal. Experts recommend dipping the meat in their signature garlic-citrus sauce and shredded cabbage to cut through the richness. Practical pro tip: Every order of Jokbal comes with a complimentary pot of 'Mandu-guk' (dumpling soup) with rice cakes; the restaurant is tucked away in a small alley near City Hall, so look for the bright red sign.
Jinju Hoegwan
Operating since 1962, this restaurant is the undisputed master of 'Kongguksu'—thick, creamy cold soy milk noodles. The soybeans used here are sourced from high-altitude regions in Gangwon-do, resulting in a broth so thick it’s often compared to cream or porridge. It is a seasonal delicacy that locals wait in massive lines for during Seoul's humid summers. The interior is a no-frills, classic Korean diner vibe where the focus is entirely on the food. Experts recommend pairing the nutty noodles with their uniquely sweet and spicy kimchi, which is specifically cured to complement the soy broth. Practical pro tip: While they serve other dishes like Bulgogi, the Kongguksu is the only reason people visit; note that this specific dish is typically served from March to November.
Deoksugung Palace
Deoksugung is unique among Seoul's palaces for its striking mix of traditional Korean and Western-style neoclassical architecture, reflecting the era of the Korean Empire's modernization. The Seokjojeon Hall looks more like a European manor than a royal palace. The palace is also famous for its picturesque 'Stonewall Walkway' (Deoksugung Doldam-gil), which is legendary for its romantic beauty in autumn. The atmosphere is intimate and slightly melancholic compared to the grander Gyeongbokgung. Experts suggest timing your visit for the changing of the guard ceremony at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, or 3:30 PM. Pro tip: Visit on a late Friday or Saturday night, as this palace stays open until 9:00 PM, offering a magical illuminated view.
Sungnyemun Gate (Namdaemun)
Sungnyemun, better known as Namdaemun (Southern Gate), is National Treasure No. 1 and was once the main gateway through the walls that surrounded Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty. After a tragic arson attack in 2008, it was meticulously restored using traditional tools and techniques. The massive stone base and the double-roofed wooden structure represent the pinnacle of early Joseon military architecture. At night, the gate is illuminated, standing as a majestic island of history amidst a sea of modern skyscrapers. Experts recommend viewing it from the pedestrian crosswalk for the best symmetrical photo. Pro tip: While you can walk through the gate during the day, it is fenced off at night; visit the adjacent Namdaemun Market afterward to see the gate's namesake in a commercial context.
