Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun)
Build a trip to Seoul
About
Heunginjimun, the 'Gate of Rising Benevolence,' is the grand eastern gate of Seoul’s ancient city wall. It is the only one of the four main gates featuring an 'Ongseong'—a semi-circular protective outer wall designed to defend against invaders. The architecture is more ornate than Namdaemun, reflecting the style of the late Joseon period. The gate is located at the center of the Dongdaemun shopping district, creating a sharp contrast between 14th-century history and 21st-century fashion. Experts recommend walking up the 'Seoul City Wall' trail starting right across the street in Naksan Park for a view of the gate from above. Pro tip: The gate is especially beautiful at night when the traffic lights create light trails around its historic stone base.

Kyochon Chicken (Dongdaemun)
Kyochon is a pioneer of the Korean fried chicken craze, famous for its 'double-frying' technique that creates an incredibly thin, crackly, and non-greasy crust. The Dongdaemun flagship is a 24-hour hub where the smell of soy-garlic glaze and spicy red peppers permeates the air. The experience of 'Chimaek' (chicken and beer) here is a quintessential Seoul nightlife ritual. Experts recommend the 'Honey Series' for a perfect balance of sweet and salty, or the 'Red Series' if you can handle authentic Korean spice. Practical pro tip: The chicken is cooked to order, so expect a 20-minute wait even after sitting down; use this time to enjoy the complimentary pickled radish and a cold draft beer.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)
Designed by the legendary Zaha Hadid, the DDP is a neofuturistic landmark characterized by its fluid, 'silver-spaceship' curves and absence of internal columns. It serves as Seoul's creative hub for exhibitions, fashion shows, and design markets. The exterior, covered in 45,133 unique aluminum panels, comes alive at night with integrated LED lighting, creating a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere. Experts recommend exploring the 'Design Lab' for unique souvenirs and visiting the LED Rose Garden (if active) for a romantic walk. Pro tip: The building is extremely photogenic at night; use a wide-angle lens to capture the sweeping architecture and the contrast with the bustling Dongdaemun markets across the street.
Gwangjang Market
Seoul's oldest and most vibrant traditional market has operated continuously since 1905, and its covered food hall is one of the best places in the country to eat authentic Korean street food at long communal tables surrounded by the electric energy of hundreds of vendors calling out their specialties. The market is famous for its bindaetteok mung bean pancakes sizzled crisp in oil, yukhoe raw beef tartare seasoned with sesame and pear, kimbap rice rolls prepared by elderly grandmothers, and mayak gimbap (addiction rolls) that have their own cult following. A visit here at lunch surrounded by office workers slurping noodles offers an unfiltered window into daily Seoul food culture.
Woo Lae Oak
One of the oldest and most respected 'Naengmyeon' (cold buckwheat noodle) houses in Seoul, Woo Lae Oak has been serving its signature North Korean-style beef broth since 1946. Unlike the tangy, mass-produced versions, their broth is celebrated for its clear, deep, and sophisticated beef essence. The sensory experience is one of refined tradition, with a spacious mid-century interior. Experts recommend starting with the 'Bulgogi,' which is cooked on classic brass domes, before finishing with a bowl of Naengmyeon to cleanse the palate. Practical pro tip: This is a 'Pyongyang-style' noodle, which means the taste is very subtle and may seem 'bland' to beginners; avoid adding too much vinegar or mustard initially to appreciate the delicate beef flavor.
