Piazza della Minerva
Build a trip to Rome
About
Just behind the Pantheon, this quiet square features one of Bernini's most whimsical works: the 'Pulcino della Minerva,' an elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk. The church on the square, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, is Rome's only Gothic church and houses Michelangelo’s 'Risen Christ.' The atmosphere is scholarly and serene, away from the immediate Pantheon crowds. Expert recommendation: look at the elephant's rear—it is said Bernini positioned it to face a rival's office as a subtle insult. Pro tip: the church interior is breathtakingly blue and gold; ensure your shoulders are covered to enter. It is a perfect spot for a quick photo-op while navigating the cobblestone alleys of the historic center.

Nearby Attractions
Pantheon
Originally built by Hadrian around 126 AD, the Pantheon is a marvel of ancient engineering, boasting the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. Its transformation into a church in 609 AD ensured its preservation. The interior is defined by the dramatic oculus, a circular opening that invites a beam of sunlight—or rain—to dance across the polychrome marble floors. Cultural highlights include the tombs of Raphael and Italian kings. Best viewed during the 'Pentecost Rose Petal Drop' or exactly at noon for the light beam effect. Pro tip: as of 2023, a paid entry ticket is required; book your weekend slot online at least 48 hours in advance to bypass the massive lines winding around the piazza.

All’Antico Vinaio (Rome)
The legendary Florentine sandwich shop has brought its massive, stuffed 'schiacciata' bread to the capital. Located right behind the Pantheon, the shop is a whirlwind of slicing meats and spreading creams. The sensory experience is dominated by the smell of freshly baked bread and truffle oil. Expert recommendation: the 'La Favolosa' (sbriciolona meat, pecorino cream, artichoke cream, and spicy eggplant) is what made them famous. Pro tip: prepare to wait in a long line, but the sandwiches are huge enough to share between two people, making it one of the best value gourmet lunches in the historic center.

Largo di Torre Argentina (Cat Sanctuary)
This archaeological site contains four Republican-era temples and the remains of Pompey's Theatre, where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC. Today, it is equally famous for being a protected sanctuary for hundreds of Rome's stray cats, who roam freely among the ancient ruins. The sensory experience is unique, blending tragic history with the charm of feline residents lounging on millennia-old marble. Expert recommendation: visit the underground cat sanctuary in the corner of the square to meet the volunteers or adopt a cat 'at a distance.' Pro tip: a new walkway recently opened (2023), allowing visitors to walk through the ruins at ground level for a small fee; previously, it could only be viewed from the street level.
Giolitti (Via degli Uffici del Vicario)
As Rome's oldest and most famous gelateria (founded in 1900), Giolitti is a masterclass in Art Nouveau style and traditional gelato making. The interior features waiters in waistcoats and a dizzying array of flavors. The sensory experience is a nostalgic trip to old-world Italy, accompanied by the whipped cream (panna) they famously add to every cone. Expert recommendation: try the 'Rice' flavor or the classic 'Pistachio.' Pro tip: the system is old-fashioned—you must pay at the cashier first, then take your receipt to the counter to choose your flavors. Don't be intimidated by the crowd; push your way to the front with your receipt in hand!
