Palais Garnier (Opera House)
Build a trip to Paris
About
This 1,979-seat opera house is a pinnacle of Second Empire architecture, designed by Charles Garnier to be a 'temple of the arts.' The interior is a riot of gold leaf, velvet, and marble, centered around the breathtaking Grand Staircase and a ceiling painted by Marc Chagall. It famously served as the setting for 'The Phantom of the Opera.' The atmosphere is one of ultimate Parisian luxury and theatrical drama. Experts recommend taking a self-guided tour during the day to explore the library and the opulent foyers. Pro tip: If you can't afford a full opera, look for 'last-minute' tickets sold at the box office 30 minutes before a performance, or simply visit the stunning 'L'Opéra Restaurant' tucked into the building's facade.

Nearby Attractions
Cafe de la Paix
Inaugurated by Empress Eugénie in 1862, Cafe de la Paix is an institution located directly across from the Palais Garnier. The interior is a gilded Second Empire marvel, designed by the same architects as the opera house. It has hosted everyone from Oscar Wilde to Emile Zola. The atmosphere is grand, formal, and unmistakably Parisian, offering the quintessential 'Grand Boulevard' experience. Expert recommendation: The onion soup (Soupe à l’oignon) here is one of the most traditional and highly-rated in the city. Pro tip: Sit on the terrace for a front-row view of the Opera house, but be prepared for high prices; it’s a 'location' tax for one of the most famous views in the world. Perfect for a celebratory coffee or a glass of champagne.
Galeries Lafayette Haussmann (Dome)
More than just a department store, Galeries Lafayette is a monument to Parisian commerce and Art Nouveau style. The crown jewel is the 43-meter-high neo-Byzantine glass dome that bathes the cosmetics floor in golden light. During the holidays, it hosts one of the city's most spectacular Christmas trees. The atmosphere is high-energy, fragrant, and bustling with international shoppers. Expert recommendation: Head to the 3rd floor 'Glasswalk'—a glass walkway suspended in mid-air—for a dizzying view directly under the dome. Pro tip: The rooftop terrace (7th floor) is free to access and provides one of the best unobstructed views of the Opera Garnier and the Eiffel Tower. It's an excellent spot for a sunset photo without the price tag of a tour.
Printemps Haussmann
Printemps (meaning 'Spring') is the chief rival to Galeries Lafayette and equally historic. Founded in 1865, it was the first department store to use electric lighting. The building features a magnificent stained-glass dome in the 'Brasserie Printemps' and an ornate facade classified as a historic monument. It focuses heavily on luxury fashion, beauty, and home decor. The vibe is slightly more curated and often less chaotic than its neighbor. Expert recommendation: Visit the '7ème Ciel' (7th Heaven) floor for vintage luxury finds and a stunning terrace view. Pro tip: Don't miss the 'Printemps du Goût' on the upper floors of the men's building—it's a gourmet food hall featuring 100% French products, perfect for edible souvenirs.
Cedric Grolet Opéra
This is the first standalone boutique by Cédric Grolet, the world-renowned pastry chef famous for his hyper-realistic fruit desserts. The Opéra location features a bakery, a pastry shop, and an upstairs tearoom. The design is sleek and modern, with an open laboratory where you can watch the chefs at work. The atmosphere is high-fashion and intense, reflecting the meticulous nature of the craft. Expert recommendation: His 'fleurs' (flower-shaped tarts) and the classic French flan are elevated to art forms here. Pro tip: If you want to sit in the tearoom for the full 'tea time' experience, you must book online weeks in advance. For the bakery/takeaway, expect a line that can last over an hour; arrive 30 minutes before opening to be among the first.
