Montmartre District (Place du Tertre)
Build a trip to Paris
About
Once the playground of Picasso, Utrillo, and Modigliani, the Place du Tertre remains the beating heart of Montmartre's artistic soul. This cobblestone square is perpetually filled with painters, portraitists, and caricaturists setting up their easels under colorful awnings. The atmosphere is nostalgic and bohemian, evoking the 'Belle Époque' era. Sensory details include the smell of fresh crepes and the sound of accordion music drifting from nearby bistros. Expert recommendation: Walk just one block away from the square to find the Espace Dalí or the quiet vineyard, Clos Montmartre. Pro tip: If you want a portrait, negotiate the price upfront and be prepared for high tourist markups; visiting before 10 AM allows you to see the artists setting up in a much quieter, more authentic setting.

Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur
The bohemian hilltop village of Montmartre presides over Paris from its 130-meter vantage point, its winding cobblestone streets, vineyard, and Place du Tertre square of portrait artists preserving the creative atmosphere that made it the home of Picasso, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Modigliani during the Belle Époque. The Romano-Byzantine Sacré-Cœur basilica crowning the hill with its distinctive white travertine dome has been gleaming over Paris since 1914, and its steps provide one of the finest panoramic views in the city, particularly at sunrise or sunset when the rooftops of Haussmann's Paris spread beneath in a gentle sea of cream stone and zinc. The adjacent streets of Rue Lepic and Rue Abbesses preserve the authentic neighborhood atmosphere of independent cafés, boulangeries, and artist studios that continues to attract creative spirits from around the world.
Sacré-Cœur Basilica
Perched atop the butte of Montmartre, this Romano-Byzantine style basilica is crafted from travertine stone that bleaches with age, remaining strikingly white even in rain. It was built as a symbol of national penance and hope following the Franco-Prussian War. The interior features one of the world's largest mosaics, depicting Christ in Majesty. The atmosphere is one of hushed reverence contrasted by the vibrant, bohemian energy of the surrounding steps where buskers perform. Expert tip: Climb the dome for the second-highest viewpoint in Paris after the Eiffel Tower. Pro tip: Beware of 'bracelet men' at the base of the stairs; keep your hands in your pockets and use the funicular (accessible with a metro ticket) if you want to skip the steep climb.
Wall of Love (Le Mur des Je t'aime)
Located in a small, quiet square in Montmartre, this artistic mural is dedicated to love. It consists of 612 tiles of enameled lava, on which the phrase 'I love you' is written 311 times in 250 different languages. Created by artists Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito, the red splashes on the wall symbolize parts of a broken heart which the wall tries to mend. The atmosphere is sweet and intimate, making it a popular spot for couples. Expert recommendation: Find the phrase in your own language for a personalized photo opportunity. Pro tip: The square is located right next to the Abbesses metro station (one of the few with an original Guimard entrance). It’s a perfect, quick 10-minute stop before climbing the hill to the Sacré-Cœur.
Pink Mamma
Part of the immensely successful Big Mamma Group, Pink Mamma is a four-story trattoria in Pigalle housed in a striking pink building. Each floor has a different theme, but the showstopper is the top floor—a lush, glass-roofed conservatory filled with plants and sunlight. The atmosphere is boisterous, trendy, and high-energy. The food focuses on authentic Italian ingredients, particularly Florentine steaks and truffle pasta. Expert recommendation: The 'Famous Truffle Pasta' served in a tin copper pot is a social media icon for a reason—it’s delicious. Pro tip: You must book online exactly when slots open (usually 2 weeks in advance) to get a table on the top floor. If you're early for your reservation, head to the 'No Entry' speakeasy in the basement for a cocktail.
