Summit One Vanderbilt
Build a trip to New York City
About
Summit is NYC’s most immersive observation deck, blending art, technology, and views. The 'Air' installation by Kenzo Digital uses floor-to-ceiling mirrors to create an infinite reflection of the city and the sky, making visitors feel like they are floating. Another room, 'Levitation,' features glass skyboxes hanging over Madison Avenue. The sensory experience is disorienting yet mesmerizing, filled with silver balloons and light play. Expert recommendation: Wear pants rather than skirts or dresses due to the mirrored floors, and bring sunglasses as the reflections can be blindingly bright during the day. Pro tip: Evening visits offer a completely different 'Unity' light show experience. Ensure you wear the provided shoe covers to protect the pristine glass and mirror surfaces.

Grand Central Terminal
Few places in New York stop you in your tracks the way Grand Central does. Step through the doors and the ceiling opens up — 125 feet of blue-green vault painted with constellations, lit from behind so they glow like the sky just before dawn. Most people don't look up. You should. The station has been running since 1913, and it shows in the best way: worn marble, brass fixtures, the particular echo of a space that has absorbed over a century of arrivals and departures. The four-faced clock above the information booth — opal, not gold — is the meet-me-here spot New Yorkers have used for generations. Before you leave, find the archway outside the Oyster Bar and stand in one corner while a friend takes the opposite one. Whisper into the wall. It carries your voice across the curve perfectly. Nobody quite agrees on the physics. It just works.
Chrysler Building
A quintessential example of Art Deco architecture, the Chrysler Building was the personal project of Walter Chrysler. Its sunburst spire, made of Nirosta stainless steel, and its eagle gargoyles modeled after Chrysler hood ornaments, make it a favorite among New Yorkers. Though it lost the 'world's tallest' title to the Empire State Building after only 11 months, its aesthetic remains unrivaled. The lobby is a masterclass in marquetry and African red granite. Expert recommendation: While there is no observation deck, you can enter the lobby for free during business hours to see the magnificent ceiling mural by Edward Trumbull. Pro tip: The spire looks best when viewed from a few blocks north on Lexington Avenue or from the Tudor City overpass at sunset.

New York Public Library - Stephen A. Schwarzman Building
Guarded by the iconic marble lions, Patience and Fortitude, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is a flagship of the New York Public Library system. This Beaux-Arts masterpiece, opened in 1911, is famous for the Rose Main Reading Room, which stretches nearly the length of a city block and features stunning ceiling murals. The atmosphere is one of hushed, scholarly reverence. Expert recommendation: Visit the 'Treasures' exhibition to see the original Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animals and a Gutenberg Bible. Pro tip: While the library is free to enter, the Rose Main Reading Room is often restricted to those who are actually studying or researching; however, free guided tours are offered daily at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM that grant access to these restricted areas.
Morgan Library & Museum
Originally the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan, this institution is a treasure trove of rare books, manuscripts, and drawings. The centerpieces are the three-story library with its ornate inlaid wood and the majestic study. The collection includes original Mozart scores and three Gutenberg Bibles. The sensory experience is defined by the scent of old parchment and the warm glow of bronze and marble. Expert recommendation: Look for the hidden staircase behind a bookshelf in the library. Pro tip: The museum offers free admission on Friday evenings from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, but reservations are required. It’s a perfect quiet retreat from the midtown hustle, located just a few blocks from the Empire State Building.
