Build a trip to Nanjing
Yuejiang Tower stands on Lion Hill above the Yangtze River and commemorates a Ming imperial vision for a tower that was described in literature centuries before the present building was completed. The modern structure uses traditional architectural forms and contains displays linked to river defense and Nanjing history, while upper levels provide broad views of bridges, port activity and the city. Its historical story is therefore as much about an unbuilt project and later commemoration as an ancient surviving tower. Visitors should account for the climb and judge the visit partly by visibility, which can vary greatly with haze and weather. The tower is associated with an essay commissioned by the Hongwu Emperor for a building that was planned but not completed in his lifetime. Its modern construction turns that unrealized literary and political project into a physical landmark above the Yangtze. Exhibits and river views connect the site with Ming naval power, city defense and Nanjing’s enduring relationship with waterborne trade.
