Build a trip to Nanjing
Nanjing Museum is one of China’s major comprehensive museums, with extensive collections of archaeology, painting, decorative arts, regional history and intangible cultural heritage. Galleries span multiple buildings and periods, so a first visit should prioritize selected sections rather than attempting every room. Objects associated with Jiangsu and successive capitals give the museum exceptional value for understanding sites across Nanjing. Advance reservation and security procedures should be checked, while several hours are needed to engage with the collection; the popular Republican-era display is only one part of a much broader institution. The institution’s collections reflect Jiangsu’s wealth in archaeology, painting, ceramics, textiles and court culture. Important objects connect prehistoric societies, southern dynasties, Ming Nanjing and later artistic traditions across the lower Yangtze. Historic exhibition architecture and newer galleries together express the museum’s own development as one of China’s earliest major modern cultural institutions.
