Build a trip to Lijiang
Tiger Leaping Gorge is a deep canyon of the Jinsha River between the Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountain massifs. Roadside viewpoints provide dramatic short visits, but the well-known upper hiking trail is a separate, strenuous route requiring much more time, reliable accommodation planning and awareness of landslide and weather conditions. The gorge’s steep terrain, heat and exposed paths should never be underestimated because an itinerary labels the destination with a single duration. Travelers must distinguish the upper viewpoint area from multi-day trekking, check current closures and carry sufficient water and sun protection. The Jinsha River cuts between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains, creating one of the deepest and most dramatic river canyons in the region. Rapids, cliffs and high villages reveal an extreme vertical landscape shaped by active geology. Legends of a tiger crossing the river at a narrow point give the gorge its name, while the modern road and trail systems expose very different levels of the same vast landform.
