About
Gogyo is a stylish, modern ramen restaurant and 'izakaya' located near the Nishiki Market. It is world-famous for its 'Kogashi' (Burnt) Ramen. Historically, the chefs perfected a technique of heating lard in a wok to the point of ignition before adding miso or soy sauce, creating a dramatic flash of fire and a unique, deep smoky flavor. The sensory highlight is the pitch-black, intensely fragrant broth that tastes rich and complex rather than bitter. Expert recommendation: The 'Kogashi Miso Ramen' is the signature dish. Pro tip: Unlike traditional quick-service ramen shops, Gogyo has a more relaxed, upscale atmosphere with an extensive menu of appetizers and sake, making it a great spot for a full dinner rather than just a quick bowl of noodles.

Nishiki Market
Known as Kyoto's Kitchen, this narrow 400-meter covered shopping arcade in the heart of downtown has supplied the city's restaurants and households with fresh produce for over 400 years, with more than 100 stalls selling pickled vegetables, fresh tofu, grilled skewers, matcha sweets, dried seafood, and traditional Kyoto ingredients that reflect the city's unique culinary culture. The market is the perfect place to sample tamagoyaki rolled omelette, try fresh yuba soy milk skin, and pick up hand-made Japanese pickles to bring home. The narrow lanes become a gastronomic adventure where shopkeepers offer samples and explain ingredients with pride.
Nishiki Warai
Nishiki Warai is a popular spot for Okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancakes) located just off the famous Nishiki Market. They are known for their 'Warai-yaki,' a Kyoto-style pancake that is exceptionally fluffy and light, almost omelet-like in texture. The atmosphere is casual, smoky, and bustling, with guests cooking on teppan grills built into their tables. The sensory experience is a mix of the sizzle of batter on hot iron and the sweet-savory aroma of brown sauce and bonito flakes. Expert recommendation: Try the 'Warai-yaki' with yakisoba noodles mixed in for the full experience. Pro tip: This is a great, family-friendly choice for a fun and interactive dinner. It can get very busy in the evenings, so arriving early or putting your name on the waitlist is a good idea.
Ippudo Kyoto
Ippudo is a world-famous ramen chain that originated in Fukuoka, but their Kyoto branch offers a high-quality, consistent experience of their signature Hakata-style Tonkotsu ramen. The interior is modern and stylish, often playing jazz music, which was the founder's original vision to change the 'dirty' image of ramen shops. The sensory highlight is the creamy, rich pork bone broth and the thin, firm noodles that can be customized to your preferred texture. Expert recommendation: Order the 'Shiromaru Classic' for the original flavor or the 'Akamaru Modern' for a more complex broth with garlic oil and spicy miso. Pro tip: Don't forget to order a side of their famous bite-sized gyoza. If you finish your noodles but still have broth, call out 'Kaedama' to get a second serving of noodles for a small fee.
Inoda Coffee Honten
Inoda Coffee is a Kyoto institution, founded in 1940 and serving as the city's premier Western-style 'Kissaten' (coffee shop). The flagship store features a unique architectural blend of a traditional machiya facade and a spacious, elegant European-style interior. Historically, it was the social hub for Kyoto's intellectuals and artists. The sensory experience is defined by the aroma of their signature 'Arabia no Shinju' (Pearl of Arabia) dark roast coffee. Expert recommendation: Order their famous 'Kyoto Breakfast' set, which includes ham, eggs, salad, and a croissant. Pro tip: At Inoda, the default is to serve coffee with sugar and milk already added—if you prefer it black, make sure to specify when ordering. The courtyard garden is a peaceful spot to enjoy your morning brew away from the city noise.
