Heian Jingu Shrine
Build a trip to Kyoto
About
Built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto, this shrine is a partial 5/8 scale reproduction of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian Period. Its bright vermilion buildings and green tiled roofs provide a vivid splash of color against the sky. The massive 'Torii' gate on the approach is one of the largest in Japan. Behind the main buildings lies a vast strolling garden (Shin-en) divided into four sections, featuring a famous covered bridge (Taihei-kaku) and rare weeping cherry trees that bloom later than others in the city. The shrine is the site of the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages) every October. Photographers should head to the garden's bridge for a classic 'old Kyoto' shot reflecting in the pond. Entrance to the main shrine is free, but the garden requires a fee and is worth every yen for its seasonal floral beauty.

Hyotei is a legendary Three-Michelin-starred restaurant located near Nanzen-ji Temple, with a history spanning over 400 years. Originally a tea house for pilgrims, it has become one of the most respected names in Kaiseki. The restaurant consists of several historic thatched-roof cottages set within a beautiful moss garden. Historically, it is famous for the 'Hyotei Egg'—a perfectly soft-boiled egg with a secret seasoning. The sensory experience is one of profound silence, historical depth, and refined simplicity. Expert recommendation: The 'Asagayu' (morning rice porridge) served in the summer is a legendary Kyoto experience. Practical Pro Tip: This is one of the most exclusive dining experiences in Japan. Sumibi Torito
Sumibi Torito is a premier Yakitori (grilled chicken) specialist that focuses on high-quality 'Jidori' (local heritage) chicken. The restaurant uses traditional binchotan charcoal, which burns at an extremely high heat to seal in the juices and add a subtle smokiness. Historically, it is known for using every part of the bird to minimize waste. Expert recommendation: Try the 'Tsukune' (chicken meatballs) and the rare chicken liver. Chion-in Temple
Chion-in is the massive head temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect and one of the most powerful religious sites in Japan. It is best known for its 'Sanmon' gate, the largest wooden gate in Japan, and its gargantuan 'Mieido' hall. The scale of the architecture is designed to humiliate the ego and inspire awe. A unique sensory detail is the 'Nightingale Floors' in the corridors, which chirp to warn of intruders, similar to Nijo Castle. The temple also houses a 70-ton bronze bell, the largest in Japan, which requires 17 monks to ring during the New Year. Expert recommendation: Climb the steep 'Wisdom Path' stairs for a workout, or use the gentler 'Woman’s Path' to reach the main hall. Pro tip: Arrive at 9:00 AM to hear the rhythmic chanting of the monks, which provides a hauntingly beautiful spiritual soundtrack to your visit.
