Byodo-in Temple (Uji)
Build a trip to Kyoto
About
Located in Uji, this temple is a masterpiece of Buddhist Pure Land architecture. Originally a rural villa for the Fujiwara clan, it was converted into a temple in 1052. The Phoenix Hall (Hoodo) is so iconic that it is featured on the Japanese 10-yen coin. The building is designed to resemble a mythological phoenix with its wings spread, reflecting beautifully in the large 'Aji-ike' pond in front of it. Inside, the Amida Buddha statue carved by Jocho is a National Treasure. The Hoshokan Museum on-site offers a high-tech, sensory journey through the temple's artifacts, including the original bronze phoenixes. Expert tip: Entrance to the Phoenix Hall requires a separate ticket with a timed entry; buy this immediately upon arrival as it often sells out. Combine your visit with a matcha tasting in Uji, the green tea capital of Japan.

Ujigami Shrine
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ujigami-jinja is believed to be the oldest standing Shinto shrine in Japan, with its main hall dating to around 1060. Historically, it served as the guardian shrine for the nearby Byodo-in Temple. The atmosphere is one of profound silence and antiquity, shaded by massive ancient trees. A unique feature is the 'Kirihara-sui,' a sacred spring within the grounds that is still used for ritual purification. Expert recommendation: Look for the rabbit-shaped omamori, as rabbits are the messengers of the local deity. Practical Pro Tip: Since it is less famous than Byodo-in, it remains incredibly peaceful even on weekends. It’s an essential stop for those interested in the earliest forms of Japanese Shinto architecture.
Nakamura Tokichi Honten (Uji)
Since 1854, Nakamura Tokichi has been a titan of the tea world in Uji. Their flagship store is a historic designated cultural property, featuring a grand 'Noren' curtain and a beautiful inner courtyard. The sensory experience is a celebration of 'Omotenashi' and the deep green color of premium matcha. Historically, they were purveyors of tea to the Shogunate. Expert recommendation: The 'Maruto Parfait,' served in a bamboo cup, is a multi-layered masterpiece of tea-infused textures. Pro tip: You can participate in a traditional tea-grinding workshop using a stone mill to make your own matcha. The wait for the cafe can be long, so put your name on the list as soon as you arrive in Uji, then explore the nearby streets until your turn comes up.
Daigo-ji Temple
Spread across an entire mountainside, Daigo-ji is a massive UNESCO World Heritage complex famous for its historical connection to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who held a legendary cherry blossom viewing party here in 1598. The temple houses Kyoto's oldest verified building, the five-story pagoda built in 951. The sensory jewel is the Bentendo Hall, located in the lower grounds, which is surrounded by a pond and becomes breathtakingly vibrant during the autumn foliage season. The Sanbo-in garden, designed by Hideyoshi himself, is a masterpiece of Momoyama-period landscaping. Expert recommendation: Allow plenty of time to explore the three distinct areas: Sanbo-in, Shimo-Daigo, and the strenuous hike to Kami-Daigo at the summit. Pro tip: This is a top-tier spot for 'Sakura' lovers, featuring massive weeping cherry trees that bloom in early April. It is less central, making it slightly quieter than Gion-area temples.
Fushimi Inari Taisha
The otherworldly tunnel of over 10,000 vermillion torii gates winding up Mount Inari for four kilometers is one of the most photographed and spiritually significant sights in all of Japan, dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, sake, and foxes. The full hike to the summit takes 2-3 hours and passes dozens of smaller shrines, stone fox guardians, and offering sites where businesses pray for prosperity, rewarding the effort with panoramic views of Kyoto from the upper trails. Dawn and dusk reveal the gates in their most magical light, and the upper paths remain uncrowded even when the lower sections teem with tourists.
