Build a trip to Huangshan
Xidi is a UNESCO-listed Huizhou village whose ceremonial gateways, ancestral spaces and dense network of Ming- and Qing-period residences preserve the wealth and social organization of merchant families. White walls, dark tiled roofs, carved doorways and narrow lanes create a coherent architectural environment, but individual houses differ in access and conservation condition. The village layout rewards a complete walking circuit rather than a direct path between famous courtyards. Arriving outside the busiest tour hours allows closer observation of wood, brick and stone carving, while respectful behavior is essential because parts of the settlement remain inhabited. Xidi’s ceremonial arch, ancestral spaces and merchant residences record the wealth of Huizhou families whose businesses extended across China. Courtyard houses use high fire walls, narrow light wells and exceptionally fine carving to create privacy and display status within a dense settlement. The village’s coherent lanes and surrounding hills preserve a complete cultural landscape recognized alongside Hongcun by UNESCO.
