Build a trip to Guilin
Daxu developed as a trading town on the Li River, and its stone-paved street, old shop houses, docks and nearby bridge preserve a quieter layer of Guilin’s commercial history. The settlement is less comprehensively restored than famous water towns, which allows everyday residences and local businesses to remain visible but also means heritage presentation can feel uneven. Walking the main street and river edge reveals how goods once moved between boats and inland markets. Visitors should come for atmosphere and small architectural details, respect private homes and avoid expecting a dense concentration of ticketed monuments. Daxu’s long stone street and river landings reflect a commercial network that moved grain, salt and regional products along the Li River. Shop houses combined storage, business and family life behind narrow façades, while nearby bridges linked the port with agricultural settlements. The town’s quieter and less uniform preservation gives its architecture a documentary quality distinct from more thoroughly reconstructed heritage districts.
