Build a trip to Denpasar
About
Perched on a dramatic offshore rock formation surrounded by crashing waves, Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most iconic and sacred sea temples, built in the 16th century by the Hindu priest Nirartha who reportedly sheltered here during his spiritual journeys along Bali's southwest coast. The temple is most spectacular at sunset when the sky transforms into shades of orange and pink silhouetting the ancient structure against the Indian Ocean, drawing thousands of visitors for the nightly spectacle. Visitors can explore the coastal temple grounds at low tide to meet the holy sea snakes said to protect the temple, and the surrounding clifftop area offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline in both directions.

Tanah Lot Temple
Tanah Lot is perhaps the most iconic image of Bali, an ancient Hindu shrine perched atop a rock formation shaped over centuries by the relentless ocean tide. Legend credits the 16th-century priest Dang Hyang Nirartha for its creation, claiming poisonous sea snakes at the base protect the temple from evil spirits. The experience is ethereal; during high tide, the temple appears to float on the water, while low tide allows visitors to walk across the sand to receive a blessing with holy water. Experts suggest photographing the silhouette from the adjacent clifftops rather than staying on the beach for the best panoramic sunset shots. Pro tip: Check the tide charts before visiting; sunset is the busiest time, so consider a sunrise visit for a tranquil, crowd-free experience.
Nyanyi Beach
Nyanyi Beach is a stunning hidden gem featuring a vast expanse of shimmering black volcanic sand and dramatic rocky outcrops. Located near Tanah Lot but far from the tourist crowds, it offers a wild and poetic atmosphere, especially during low tide when the wet sand acts as a giant mirror for the sky. The sensory experience is one of solitude and raw nature—just the wind, the crashing surf, and the sparkling minerals in the sand. Experts recommend this beach for long walks and photography rather than swimming due to the strong currents. Pro tip: There are very few facilities here, so bring your own water and snacks; it is a prime location for a quiet, private sunset experience away from the commercialized beach clubs.
Penny Lane
Penny Lane is an architectural marvel that blends Romanesque aesthetics with bohemian Balinese charm, featuring high glass ceilings, classical statues, and lush indoor palms. The restaurant offers an eclectic menu ranging from Moroccan-inspired dishes to classic burgers and schnitzels. The sensory experience is visually overwhelming in the best way possible, with art and greenery at every turn, creating a 'palace-like' atmosphere in the middle of Canggu. Expert recommendations include the loaded fries and their creative cocktail list. Pro tip: This is one of the most Instagram-famous spots in Bali; for the best photos without a crowd in your shot, visit for an early lunch around 11:00 AM. Despite the grand decor, the vibe remains casual and welcoming.
Mason Canggu
Mason is the pinnacle of Canggu’s trendy dining scene, focusing on the fundamental elements of cooking: fire, smoke, and artisanal craftsmanship. The aesthetic is industrial-chic with concrete walls and an open-air terrace. The menu features house-cured meats, wood-fired vegetables, and hand-stretched cheeses, emphasizing high-quality local produce. The sensory experience is centered on the sights and smells of the open wood-fire grill and the lively, fashionable crowd. Experts recommend the wood-fired lamb shoulder and the house-made pickles. Pro tip: This is one of the hardest tables to get in Canggu; booking via their website is essential. If you can’t get a dinner slot, their lunch service is equally excellent and slightly easier to navigate.
