About
Pura Sakenan is a highly significant 10th-century coastal temple located on the southern tip of Serangan Island. Historically, it was a major pilgrimage site for Balinese Hindus who used to cross the sea by foot or boat during low tide. The temple architecture is unique, utilizing coral stone rather than the usual volcanic rock, reflecting its maritime heritage. The atmosphere is spiritually charged yet peaceful, with the sound of the ocean waves providing a backdrop to prayers. Experts recommend visiting during the 'Kuningan' holiday when the temple comes alive with massive processions. Pro tip: Ensure you are covered from shoulder to knee to respect the local customs.

Serangan Island (Turtle Island)
Once a separate island accessible only by boat, Serangan is now connected to the mainland by a bridge. Known historically for its sea turtles and its coastal temple, the island is now a center for water sports and eco-tourism. The landscape is a mix of mangrove forests, reclaimed land, and traditional fishing villages. The sensory experience is more rugged than Sanur, with a salty breeze and wide-open horizons. Experts recommend exploring the island on a scooter to find the hidden 'junk' boat graveyards and local fish grill shacks. Pro tip: The island is excellent for surfing during the rainy season (November–March) when the eastern breaks are working.
Pura Dalem Sakenan
Pura Dalem Sakenan is a 10th-century 'Temple of the Dead' located on the western shore of Serangan Island. It is one of the six most sacred temples in Bali (Sad Kahyangan), dedicated to the protector of the island's seas. The architecture features rare coral carvings and ancient wooden gates that have weathered centuries of sea spray. The sensory experience is one of profound antiquity and spiritual weight. Experts recommend visiting during the Kuningan holiday to witness the dramatic 'Barong' dance performances. Pro tip: The walk from the main Serangan bridge to the temple offers beautiful views of the mangroves, but bring a hat as there is little shade.
Bali Sharks (Eco-Tour)
Bali Sharks is a marine conservation initiative that offers an educational 'shark nursery' experience on Serangan Island. The project aims to save sharks from being sold at markets by providing a safe sea-pen environment for them to grow before being released into the wild. Visitors can enjoy the unique sensory experience of snorkeling with juvenile blacktip reef sharks in a controlled, safe setting. Experts recommend the tour for families as it is highly educational and provides a 'safety first' approach to wildlife interaction. Pro tip: Combine this with a visit to the nearby Turtle Conservation Center for a full day of marine eco-education.
Shark Island (Serangan)
Shark Island is an eco-conservation project located off the coast of Serangan Island, dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of young sharks. This is an educational adventure where visitors can safely swim in a fenced sea pen with blacktip and whitetip reef sharks. The experience is designed to dispel myths about these apex predators and emphasize their importance to the marine ecosystem. The sensory rush of seeing a fin glide past you is exhilarating but safe for all ages. Experts recommend the 'Shark Encounter' package which includes feeding. Pro tip: Bring a waterproof camera and your own swimwear; snorkeling gear is usually provided by the center.
