Build a trip to Denpasar
An Ubud institution since 1995, this legendary open-air warung has been serving what many consider Bali's best pork ribs slow-cooked over coconut charcoal for hours until falling off the bone, glazed with a secret recipe barbecue marinade that has made them a pilgrimage destination for meat lovers from around the world. The martinis are notoriously strong and the wooden tables fill quickly with a mix of expat regulars and tourists who discovered the place through word of mouth before its global fame exploded. The simple menu of ribs, satay, and rice dishes served amid the soundtrack of clinking glasses and animated conversation at communal tables captures the casual, joyful spirit of Bali dining at its best.
Locavore NXT is the ambitious evolution of Bali’s most celebrated restaurant, pushing the boundaries of hyper-local sustainability. Set in a futuristic, purpose-built structure, the dining experience revolves around ingredients exclusively sourced from the Indonesian archipelago—no imported dairy, wheat, or citrus. The multi-course tasting menu is a sensory journey through Indonesia's biodiversity, featuring fermented elements, forest-foraged greens, and ethically raised proteins. The architecture integrates the kitchen and dining space, allowing guests to witness the intense craftsmanship behind each plate. Experts recommend opting for the local beverage pairing, which includes innovative ferments and infusions. Pro tip: Reservations must be made months in advance via their website; inform them of any dietary restrictions early, though the 'no substitutions' policy is strictly upheld to preserve the integrity of the menu.
Mozaic is a pioneer of fine dining in Bali, led by Chef Chris Salans who blends classic French techniques with the exotic flavors of Indonesian spices. Set in a lush, romantic garden, the restaurant offers an ever-evolving tasting menu that highlights seasonal ingredients like torch ginger, kluwak, and finger lime. The sensory experience is sophisticated and intimate, with impeccable service and a world-class wine cellar. Experts recommend the 'Grand Tasting Menu' for the ultimate culinary journey. Pro tip: This is a formal dining experience; a dress code applies (no shorts or flip-flops). Arrive 30 minutes early to enjoy an aperitif in the lounge while the staff explains the local ingredients that will be featured in your meal. Reservations are essential.
The original Bali Swing is an adventure park that pioneered the global trend of 'jungle swings' over deep valleys and rice terraces. It provides a thrilling sensory experience of flying through the air with panoramic views of the Ayung River canyon. The park features various swing heights, 'bird nests' for photos, and lush garden walkways. Experts recommend arriving exactly when they open at 8:00 AM to avoid the massive lines for the most popular swings. Pro tip: Wear bright, flowing clothing (dresses are popular) to create the most dramatic visual effect in your photos. Most packages include a buffet lunch, which is quite decent.
Perched on the edge of the Sayan Ridge, The Sayan House offers a unique culinary marriage between Japanese precision and Latin American passion. The restaurant overlooks the sacred Ayung River valley, providing a breathtaking backdrop of tropical jungle. The sensory experience is defined by the contrast of delicate sashimi and bold chili spices, served in a sophisticated yet homey setting that feels like a private villa. Expert recommendations include the Salmon Avocado Sushi Bomb and the Crispy Prawn Tacos. Pro tip: This is arguably the best sunset spot in Ubud; book a table in the garden lounge for 5:30 PM to enjoy a cocktail as the valley transforms under the golden hour light.
