Build a trip to Dali
Xizhou is a historic Bai market town on the fertile plain between Cangshan and Erhai, renowned for merchant residences, decorated gateways and a strong agricultural setting. Streets radiate from market spaces into neighborhoods of enclosed courtyard houses, many built by prosperous trading families during the late Qing and Republican periods. White walls, dark tiled roofs, painted screen walls and finely carved timber create a distinctive architectural vocabulary. Beyond the denser center, fields and village edges preserve the relationship between domestic wealth, farming and regional exchange that supported the town. Xizhou merchants developed commercial networks across Yunnan and beyond, bringing resources and outside influences back into family compounds while maintaining recognizable Bai spatial traditions. Celebrated houses associated with the Yan, Dong and other families demonstrate variations on courtyard planning, ceremonial halls and ornamental craftsmanship. The town is also known for dairy products, local markets and xizhou baba, foods rooted in the surrounding agricultural economy. Xizhou’s value lies in the coexistence of architecture and living community: heritage buildings, everyday commerce, religious customs and cultivated land remain parts of one continuous Bai cultural landscape.
