Build a trip to Dali
Ximatan Cableway is a major piece of mountain infrastructure ascending the eastern face of Cangshan from the Dali basin toward the high alpine zone near Ximatan. The long vertical journey crosses striking bands of vegetation, moving from settled foothills and evergreen forest toward colder, more exposed terrain of rock, meadow and seasonal snow. Gondolas reveal the scale of the fault-raised mountain wall and open wide views over Dali Ancient City, agricultural land and Erhai far below. Upper structures sit within an environment whose cloud, wind and temperature differ sharply from the basin. The name Ximatan refers to the high “Horse-Washing Pool,” associated in legend with Kublai Khan’s troops during the Yuan conquest of Dali. The alpine water body and surrounding slopes add historical imagination to a landscape primarily shaped by elevation, geology and severe weather. As an engineered route, the cableway creates a cross-section through Cangshan that would otherwise require a demanding ascent, making transitions in forest and climate immediately visible. Its cultural meaning comes from this encounter between modern transport, mountain legend and the enormous physical relief that defines western Dali.
