Sanxingdui Museum presents one of the most remarkable Bronze Age archaeological discoveries in China, centered on ritual pits and a large settlement north of Chengdu. Monumental bronze masks, standing figures, gold objects, jade and elephant tusks reveal an ancient Shu culture with artistic forms unlike those of contemporary central China. The new museum architecture uses broad, earth-toned volumes and controlled light to give the large bronzes a powerful spatial setting. The objects suggest complex ritual activity, specialized craftsmanship and long-distance exchange more than three thousand years ago. Their unusual eyes, ears and proportions have inspired popular mystery, but archaeology connects them with a real urban society and with later discoveries at Jinsha. Sanxingdui expands the history of early Chinese civilization by demonstrating that powerful regional centers developed distinctive visual and religious traditions beyond the Yellow River heartland.
