Build a trip to Chengdu
Mount Qingcheng is a forested mountain west of Chengdu revered as one of the birthplaces and major sacred centers of Daoism. Paths climb through dense evergreen vegetation to temples, pavilions and caves associated with Zhang Daoling and the early Celestial Masters tradition. The front mountain contains the principal religious architecture, while the broader landscape of peaks, streams and secluded valleys embodies the Daoist ideal of retreat within nature. Temple complexes such as Tianshi Cave and Shangqing Palace developed across different dynasties and remain active places of worship. Their placement within quiet forest makes architecture appear as part of the mountain rather than as an isolated monument. Together with the Dujiangyan irrigation system, Mount Qingcheng forms a UNESCO World Heritage landscape linking spiritual practice, environmental knowledge and the historical development of the Chengdu Plain.
