Build a trip to Chengdu
Luodai Ancient Town is the best-known center of Hakka culture in western Sichuan, established by migrant communities whose ancestors came from Guangdong, Fujian and neighboring regions. Its long streets, courtyard houses and guild halls preserve institutions through which different native-place groups maintained social ties, worship and commercial support. The Guangdong, Jiangxi and other guild halls use regional architectural details that make migration history visible within the townscape. Hakka language, food, customs and community identity developed here within the wider Chengdu Plain, demonstrating how migration reshaped Sichuan after periods of population loss. The town’s architecture is therefore more than picturesque scenery: it records networks connecting southwest China with distant southern provinces. Festivals and everyday businesses continue to express this layered identity, even as tourism has transformed the central streets.
